How to tell about your thoughts & opinions in Finnish
Structures:
- Subject in genitive form + mielestä + statement
- Mun mielestä jenna on söpö = i think jenna is cute
- Subject in elative case + statement
- Musta Jenna on söpö = I think Jenna is cute
- For closed questions, use the basic word order for questions:
- Onko Jenna sun mielestä söpö? = Do you think that Jenna is cute?
- “Onko sun mielestä Jenna söpö?” is also ok for word order.
- Remember the word order with questions.
- If you want to ask for someone’s opinion about something (OPEN QUESTION):
- Mitä mieltä + be verb + the target of the opinion in ELATIVE CASE
- ex. Mitä mieltä oot Jennasta? = What do you think about Jenna?
- Mitä mieltä aleksi on ideasta? = what does Aleksi think about the idea?
- Use Cooljugator to look up elative forms if necessary
- Mitä mieltä + be verb + the target of the opinion in ELATIVE CASE
ELATIVE case forms for person pronouns:
spoken Finnish:
musta
susta
hänestä
meistä
teistä
niistä/heistä
Note: ELATIVE form of “Se” is “siitä” but it’s not really used in this context. Use the “mielestä structure instead:
- Aleksin mielestä tää idea on hyvä.
- Hänestä tää on hyvä idea.
- Siitä tää oon hyvä
Word list:
- söpö = cute
- idea = an idea
- ravintola = restaurant
- paras = the best
- hauska = fun
- siisti = tidy (in spoken this means cool)
- kurssi = a course
