How to tell about your thoughts & opinions in Finnish

Structures:

  • Subject in genitive form + mielestä + statement
    • Mun mielestä jenna on söpö = i think jenna is cute
  • Subject in elative case + statement
    • Musta Jenna on söpö = I think Jenna is cute
  • For closed questions, use the basic word order for questions:
    • Onko Jenna sun mielestä söpö? = Do you think that Jenna is cute?
    • “Onko sun mielestä Jenna söpö?” is also ok for word order.
    • Remember the word order with questions.
  • If you want to ask for someone’s opinion about something (OPEN QUESTION):
    • Mitä mieltä + be verb + the target of the opinion in ELATIVE CASE
      • ex. Mitä mieltä oot Jennasta? = What do you think about Jenna?
      • Mitä mieltä aleksi on ideasta? = what does Aleksi think about the idea?
      • Use Cooljugator to look up elative forms if necessary

ELATIVE case forms for person pronouns:

spoken Finnish:

Note: ELATIVE form of “Se” is “siitä” but it’s not really used in this context. Use the “mielestä structure instead:

  • Aleksin mielestä tää idea on hyvä.
  • Hänestä tää on hyvä idea.
  • Siitä tää oon hyvä
